SUFFERING; THE ALLOTTED PORTION OF LOVERS

SUFFERING; THE ALLOTTED PORTION OF LOVERS

An elderly priest was once asked what would happen if a priest falls in love, he kept quiet for sometime and replied saying, "he will suffer, that is the portion of lovers". Can we say that this statement has some elements of truth in it. Even though love is a sweet thing, everyone wants to love and to be loved, we always seek to be cared for and in fact, we desire to care too for those we love because seeing our loved ones happy gives us its own special kind joy. Nevertheless, experience has taught us that to love is to suffer. The afflictions of our loved ones pains us, the worries that troubles them troubles us. In fact, even in our own pains and worries, sometimes we feel pained knowing the pains our loved ones will undergo when they discover our afflictions.

Faced with this mixture of sweetness and bitterness in our experience of love, are we to run away from this deepest yearning of our hearts. Aristotle says that nothing is more human than reasoning. Even though this statement is true to a great extent, in truth I believe that nothing is more human, not only human but all creatures of God, than love. Love we all seek and desire. Every human being understands this language, it unifies the diversity we have because of our differences in language, skin color, tribe, culture and so on. This is so because all men can understand its language. This was the language the early missionaries used to communicate in distant, far away missions and they were understood. Even animals and plants understand this language. When you take proper care of flowers with love, they come out blossoming better nor can we not testify that even pets like cats and dogs are freer around those that show them love.

This was, then, the very case with our blessed mother, she suffered much because she loved much. It is a given that the heart of a good mother feels the pains of her child. What then can we say about our blessed Mother. Her heart full of love for her beloved son cannot help but bleed as her son bleeds. Nor are we to doubt the intensity of Mary's love not only for her son but for others too. Her actions at Cana shows how deeply she is concerned at the disgrace and torments of others. What then are we to say about her own son. Mary suffered intensely because she loved intensely. If her son's suffering is beyond all telling, then consider the sufferings of his Mother.

What can we say about ourselves. We all desire to love and to be loved. We, then, should bear in mind that in our loving relationship with our Spouses, Brothers and sisters, Friends, relatives and all those we hold dear, that we should be open to suffering. Nor are we to run away from love because of the fear of suffering. Then we will be considered a coward like the servant in the Gospels who hid his talent out of fear. Love is a talent that we all have, let us invest in it.

Mary, Mother of sorrows help us to love intensely and to accept all the sufferings that comes with it just like you did.
