After we closed from work yesterday afternoon, as usual my cab guy came to pick me and take me back to my apartment.
Along the way, he told me that he needs a little help from me. I said i'm listening and he explained that he didn't buy the usual GRA daily ticket for cab operators that afternoon and that i shouldn't be offended but in case the task force stops him when we pass through the GRA gate, i should pretend that I am a lawyer so they will let him go.
I wanted to tell him that's not a big deal and that if putting on a fake act as a lawyer will save him from a clash with the task force, i don't mind assisting him. However, i thought about it and plainly told him that i am a lawyer.
Dear friend, the incident made me to laugh but it also gave me much room for thought. Many of us go through life pretending to be what we already are. We try to achieve union with God, not realising that all along in Christ, Divinity is joined to our Humanity. We make efforts to come into God's presence whereas we never left His presence.
Shakespeare was really on to something when he wrote that all the world's a stage. Perhaps he observed that a great deal many people carry on as if life is a rehearsal. And when we carry on as if life is a rehearsal, we will lack interior liberty of spirit because everything will be all about performance instead of loving union with God and one another.
It's not easy to pretend to be what you're not, but guess what? It's even harder to pretend to be what you are, because when you pretend to be what you're not, you're fooling others, but when you pretend to be what you already are, you're fooling yourself.
What if we stopped acting and actually awakened to reality? What if we realised that we can never become what we already are?
If we stopped pretending to be who we are, we will know our true selves, and more importantly, we will discover more room and potential for growth.
Stay safe. Stay inspired.
Emilia
